CWE-416

Impact

A malicious RDP server can crash your client and potentially manipulate client memory when a user connects. The attacker needs the user to initiate an RDP connection to a compromised or untrusted server.

Root cause

The static rdpsnd channel disconnect path frees audio formats and device memory without joining play_thread, triggering a use-after-free during asynchronous Wave2 playback.

Affected systems

FreeRDP 2.1.0 before 3.32.0

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, avoid connecting to untrusted RDP endpoints or disable audio output redirection.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11

NVD description

FreeRDP 2.1.0 before 3.32.0 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in the static rdpsnd channel disconnect path, which frees audio formats and device without joining play_thread. A malicious RDP server can disconnect while asynchronous Wave2 playback processes queued PDUs, causing the client to read freed heap memory and crash.
