Impact
A malicious RDP server can crash FreeRDP clients, causing denial of service. The attacker needs a user to connect to their malicious server.
Root cause
The RDPEAR NDR reader dereferences a null pointer during cleanup when processing truncated KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME structures.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 3.9.0 through versions prior to 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. Avoid connecting clients to untrusted or unverified RDP servers until patched.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install freerdp2-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP from 3.9.0 before 3.32.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the RDPEAR NDR reader that allows malicious servers to crash clients via truncated KERB_RPC_INTERNAL_NAME data. Attackers can send a CreateApReqAuthenticatorReq with NameCount of two or more ending before the Names pointer, causing cleanup to dereference a null base and terminate the client.
