CWE-129

Impact

A malicious RDP server can crash FreeRDP clients or cause an out-of-bounds write of decoded video data. The attacker needs the user to connect to their malicious server using the /video option.

Root cause

FreeRDP stores signed geometry coordinates into unsigned variables without validation, causing 32-bit arithmetic overflow that bypasses the blit clamp check in gdiVideoShowSurface().

Affected systems

FreeRDP versions before 3.32.0

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. As an interim workaround, do not connect to untrusted RDP servers with the /video flag enabled.

shell
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

FreeRDP before 3.32.0 stores the server-supplied signed MS-RDPEGT geometry origin unchecked in an unsigned video surface coordinate, so the blit clamp in gdiVideoShowSurface() wraps in 32-bit arithmetic and is skipped. A malicious RDP server can send a negative topLevelLeft to clients connecting with /video, causing an out-of-bounds write of decoded H.264 picture data or a client abort.
