Impact
A malicious RDP server can crash FreeRDP clients (denial of service) when a user pastes copied files. This requires the user to connect to the malicious server and initiate a paste action.
Root cause
The WinPR clipboard conversion function scans a server-supplied file descriptor without verifying NUL-termination, triggering a heap out-of-bounds read.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, disable client clipboard redirection when connecting to untrusted RDP servers.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read in the WinPR clipboard function convert_filedescriptors_to_file_list(), which scans a server-controlled FILEDESCRIPTORW cFileName with unbounded _wcschr() and count_special_chars() calls without a NUL-termination guarantee. A malicious RDP server can send an odd-length FILEDESCRIPTORW blob in a CB_FORMAT_DATA_RESPONSE, crashing X11, Wayland, and SDL clients when the user pastes server-copied files.
