Impact
Local attackers on shared Unix hosts can steal private keys generated by winpr-makecert. They need local account access and rely on a target user running the key generation tool.
Root cause
The winpr-makecert utility creates unencrypted private key files with overly permissive world-readable permissions and protects PFX files with a hard-coded default password.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 on Unix hosts
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, restrict permissions on existing generated keys and PFX files using 'chmod 600 <keyfile>'.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an insecure permission vulnerability in winpr-makecert that creates unencrypted private keys without owner-only file modes. Local users on multi-user Unix hosts can read world-readable key files or open PFX files protected by the hard-coded default password to steal private keys.
