Impact
Local attackers on multi-user Unix hosts can steal PKINIT private keys from a shared temporary directory during soft-smartcard logon. They need existing local user access and must time the read while another user authenticates.
Root cause
The crypto_write_pem function writes private key files to disk without restricting file permissions to the owner.
Affected systems
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 on Unix hosts
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, avoid using soft-smartcard authentication on shared multi-user systems.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11 || sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp3-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP from 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an incorrect permission assignment vulnerability that allows local users to read private keys written by crypto_write_pem without owner-only permissions. Attackers on multi-user Unix hosts can enumerate the shared temporary directory during soft-smartcard logon to read the world-readable PKINIT private-key copy.
