Impact
A malicious RDP server can crash your FreeRDP client by sending crafted, out-of-order video messages. An attacker needs a user to connect to their malicious or compromised RDP server first.
Root cause
The client video redirection channel clears and nullifies presentation->geometry upon receiving a Geometry CLEAR message, but subsequent VideoData messages dereference that pointer without checking if it is null.
Affected systems
FreeRDP versions prior to 3.32.0
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
Fix & remediation
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. If upgrading immediately is not possible, do not connect to untrusted RDP endpoints.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade freerdp2-x11AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
NVD description
FreeRDP before 3.32.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the client video redirection channel that allows malicious servers to crash clients by sending out-of-order messages. Attackers can send a Geometry CLEAR message that nulls presentation->geometry, then send VideoData that dereferences it, causing client denial of service.
