CWE-22

Impact

Authenticated users with Sales Representative roles can delete arbitrary files on the server, potentially triggering remote code execution by wiping files like wp-config.php. The attacker needs an account possessing the plugin's import_contacts capability.

Root cause

Insufficient file path validation in the copy_file function permits directory traversal during file operations.

Affected systems

Groundhogg — CRM, Newsletters, and Marketing Automation plugin for WordPress versions up to and including 4.9.3

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H

Fix & remediation

Upgrade Groundhogg to a version newer than 4.9.3. If patching immediately is not possible, revoke the import_contacts capability from the Sales Representative role or deactivate the plugin.

shell
$ wp plugin update groundhogg

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

The Groundhogg — CRM, Newsletters, and Marketing Automation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file deletion due to insufficient file path validation in the copy_file function in all versions up to, and including, 4.9.3 This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Sales Representative-level access and above, to delete arbitrary files on the server, which can easily lead to remote code execution when the right file is deleted (such as wp-config.php). This is exploitable by any user holding the plugin-defined import_contacts capability, which is granted by default to the plugin's custom Sales Representative role.
