CWE-79

Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can inject persistent web scripts that execute in visitors' browsers. They only need network access to submit data containing the payload to the affected board.

Root cause

The mbw_htmlspecialchars2() sanitizer fails to escape characters used in unquoted HTML attributes, allowing script injection via the user_name parameter.

Affected systems

Mang Board plugin for WordPress up to, and including, 2.4.3

CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N

Fix & remediation

Upgrade Mang Board to a version above 2.4.3 when available, or deactivate and delete the plugin immediately if patching cannot be done.

shell
$ wp plugin deactivate mangboard

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

The Mang Board plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'user_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The save-time sanitizer mbw_htmlspecialchars2() is ineffective against this vector because the exploit payload relies solely on unquoted HTML attribute syntax using only spaces, alphanumerics, and characters such as =, parentheses, and dots — none of which are escaped.
