Impact
Remote unauthenticated attackers can crash the server via an out-of-memory denial of service. Exploitation requires network access to a Vert.x HTTP proxy configured with a body transformer interceptor.
Root cause
The body transformer interceptor fails to enforce the maximum buffered bytes limit, causing unbounded heap memory allocation per request.
Affected systems
io.vertx:vertx-http-proxy versions 5.0.0 through 5.0.12, 5.1.0 through 5.1.9, and 5.2.0

Fix & remediation
Upgrade to fixed versions (5.0.13+, 5.1.10+, or 5.2.1+). If upgrading cannot be done immediately, disable or remove the intercepting body transformer from the HTTP proxy configuration.

NVD description
In Eclipse Vert.x versions [5.0.0,5.0.12] or [5.1.0,5.1.9] or [5.2.0, 5.2.0], the HTTP proxy provides a body transformer interceptor that relies on a max buffered bytes limit to ensure a bounded buffer for each request. This can be used to force a server to indefinitely allocate heap. This vulnerability requires to use an intercepting body transformer. The impacted component is io.vertx:vertx-http-proxy.
