CWE-787

Impact

A peer with access to a configured BGP EVPN session can crash the routing protocol daemon (rpd), causing a denial of service and disrupting network routing. Exploitation requires an established BGP EVPN peer and an active telemetry subscription to the l2vpn-evpn RIB sensor.

Root cause

An out-of-bounds write occurs in rpd while processing BGP EVPN routes when the l2vpn-evpn RIB telemetry sensor is active.

Affected systems

Fix & remediation

Check advisory JSA112187 for the fixed Junos OS / Junos OS Evolved releases to upgrade to. As an interim workaround, cancel or disable active telemetry subscriptions for the l2vpn-evpn RIB sensor.

AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?

NVD description

An Out-of-bounds Write vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an attacker with access to a configured BGP EVPN peer to cause a denial of service via BGP EVPN route processing when the l2vpn-evpn RIB telemetry sensor is subscribed. Successful exploitation can crash rpd and interrupt routing protocols until the daemon restarts and reconverges.
