- CWE-476
Impact
Remote, unauthenticated attackers can crash the iperf3 server daemon and cause a denial of service. They only need network access to send a malformed parameter exchange request.
Root cause
A null pointer dereference leads to a segmentation fault in the iperf_exchange_parameters() function.
Affected systems
iperf3 version 3.17.1 (and possibly earlier releases; fixed in 3.18).
CVSS v3.1 · CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Fix & remediation
Upgrade to iperf 3.18 or later. If patching immediately is not possible, stop the iperf3 service or block access to the listening port (default TCP 5201) with firewall rules.
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade iperf3AI-suggested. Run it in staging first and check it against the vendor advisory. Why?
